Too Busy to Change?

When was the last time you weren't busy at work?

Everyone seems to thrive on being busy; in fact, if you met someone new and asked them how busy they were at work and they said ‘I’m not that busy’ you may think it rather odd.

Being busy seems the norm but are you channelling your efforts in the right direction? Are you and your company evolving, or are you just climbing the same mountains every day?

Change is an inevitable part of life and when introduced into a business, it’s how you manage and deliver it that makes the difference between success and failure. The phrase "work smart, not hard" embodies this philosophy perfectly.

Successful business change must be swift and purposeful. Slow change is no change. If you persist with the same old practices, you'll inevitably yield the same results. So, the question is: what changes, improvements, and solutions must both you and your company embrace? Do you have a change plan, strategy, or dream in place, or are you too preoccupied to even contemplate it? Do you have the courage or the know-how to instigate change? Remember, great leaders aren't afraid to seek guidance; they see it as a strength, not a weakness.

Recently, Midmer was introduced to advise a high-street retailer on the changes and improvements essential for their property department's success. Despite remarkable physical growth and national expansion over the past years, they persisted with outdated practices but recognised the necessity for change.

Midmer spent 3 months completing a full review of the team's organisational structure, management and governance, operational processes, and reporting methods. The team was busy but not operating at peak efficiency. Our bespoke change plan introduced solutions, from superior tools and smarter workflows as well as suggested alternative suppliers.

The results were staggering; we saved the company approximately £5 million in Capex annually. We initiated a comprehensive training programme for the team, new reporting formats and were set up for European and global expansion with tighter design guidelines. They also began delivering new retail projects two weeks ahead of schedule. It was a win-win-win scenario. This showcases how some external advice can deliver invaluable results.

Where do you see yourself a year from now? Do you need to shake the tree and make some changes? Don't let busyness be an excuse for stagnation. Have the courage to seek assistance, as all great leaders do, and institute changes that benefit your team, your company, and most importantly, you.
